SUBMITTING
ENTRIES TO QUILT SHOW
RULES – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
- You must be a QSA 2008 student registered for classes or lectures.
- Registrants must be the maker (all or in part) of the entry.
- Entries must have been completed since 2003 and may not have been
shown before in a previous QSA show.
- All quilt entries must consist of three layers secured together by
quilting, except for yo-yo and cathedral window quilts. All wearable
quilted entries must consist of at least two layers secured by quilting.
- Registrants may enter up to three (3) items per category.
- Entries must have a label attached to the back lower right corner,
with quilt name, registrant's name, address, and telephone number. If
the entry is made by two people, BOTH names should appear on label.
Wearables can be labeled inside. A cover must be placed over the label
so information is not visible during judging.
- A 4” sleeve is required on all quilts on which the perimeter
measures 100” or larger. A 2” sleeve is required on all
other quilts.
- Entries must be finished, clean and not in need of repair.
RIBBONS, PRIZES AND AWARDS
Ribbons will be awarded to First, Second, Third Place and/or Honorable
Mention in each category; Best of Show chosen by judges; Judges' Choice
- one award per judge; and Viewer's Choice.
All ribbons are awarded at the discretion of the judges. Judges reserve
the right NOT to award all ribbons in a category if they deem appropriate.
If there is not a blue ribbon quality quilt in a category, a first place
ribbon may not be awarded.
All WINNERS will be receive an “I’m a Winner!” ribbon
so that everyone will have the opportunity to meet and congratulate
them!
Best of Show and Viewer’s Choice winners will each receive $100
given by the Birmingham Quilters Guild.
A 2009 Scholarship Award is given by the Board of Directors of QSAI.
CATEGORIES:
Categories may be combined or split at the discretion of the quilt show
committee due to the total number of entries.
Quilt Sizes are outlined as follows:
Large = Perimeter of quilt must be 280" or more
Medium = Perimeter of quilt must be less than 280" and more than
100"
Small = Perimeter of quilt must be less than 100"
The following categories will be subdivided by large, medium, and
small:
Pieced Quilts - Made and quilted by one person.
Pieced Duet Quilts - Made and quilted by two people. This includes quilting
done for hire.
Appliqued Quilts - The majority of the quilt is appliqued /made and
quilted by one person.
Appliqued Duet Quilts - The majority of the quilt is appliqued /made
and quilted by two people.
Art Quilts - Quilts of original design or an original interpretation
of a contemporary or traditional design. Quilts shall not be a copy
of an existing work or a commercial pattern. Quilts must be made and
quilted by one person.
Art Duet Quilts - Quilts made and quilted by two people.
Other Technique Quilts - Any quilt that does not obviously fit into
another category/made and quilted by one person.
Other Technique Duet Quilts - Made and quilted by two people. Examples
include whole cloth, crazy quilts, yo-yos, photo quilts, painted, embroidered,
and/or heavily embellished quilts, cathedral window quilts, quilts with
very special techniques and quilts that are a balanced combination of
more than one technique, such as applique & pieced etc.
Collaborative Quilts - Quilts made by three or more people. Includes
all techniques and sizes including miniatures. Examples: progressive
and round robin quilts.
The following
categories are not subdivided by size:
Miniature Quilts - Quilts with overall patterns reflecting reduced scale
- pieced and/or apppliqued. This category is not determined by size
only; it must be a small-scale version of a full size quilt or wall
hanging. The maximum block size is 4" and the longest side of the
quilt must be no more than 30"
Wearbale Art - Any quilted wearable garments.
Home Decorations - Quilted table runners, tree skirts, pillows. or any
other quilted items used as a decoration in the home.
Accessories - Any quilted item used as a fashion accessory.
ENTRY PROCESS
Each entry must have it's own entry form, photo, and self-addressed
stamped postcard which should be RECEIVED no later than MAY 1, 2008,
by Annie Woods, 316 Hewitt St, Trussville, AL 35173. The postcard will
be mailed back to you as confirmation that your entry form has been
received. It will also serve as your claim check when you pick up your
quilt at the end of the show
- Each entry MUST be submitted in a separate cloth bag, such as a pillowcase,
with the registrant's name and telephone number clearly and permanently
marked on the cloth bag. No plastic bags permitted.
- Quilts will be accepted on Monday, June 9, 2008 at:
Homewood Senior Center, Birmingham – 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Sewing Gallery, Cullman – 11:00-3:00 p.m.
Quilter’s Refuge, Decatur – 11:00-5:00 p.m.
Kudzu Quilt Shop, Montgomery – 11:00-3:00 p.m.
Carolina Lily Quilt Shop, Tuscaloosa – 11:00-3:00 p.m.
- Mailed quilts must be received by June 9, 2008. Please purchase sufficient
insurance for your entry if mailing.
Ship to: Annie Woods, 316 Hewitt St., Trussville, AL 35173
- Mailed entries must include another self-addressed, stamped postcard.
This will provide confirmation of arrival of your entry and serve as
your receipt.
PICKING UP YOUR QUILT AFTER THE SHOW
All quilts must be picked up in the gym at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday evening
June 14, 2008. No quilts be returned by mail.
You must have your postcard receipt to pick up your quilt. If you are
unable to pick up your entry, you may give your receipt to a friend
who agrees to pick it up for you. Absolutely no quilts will be removed
early!
