MARY SORENSEN

MS/3 – BUZZIN’ AROUND
6-hour workshop - intermediate to advanced levels

This whimsical design incorporating summer flowers, dragonflies, and bees is a great project to explore advanced techniques for precision hand appliqué. Refine your skills as you work with small, complex shapes, smooth curves, and precision placement. Students must have a comfortable knowledge of hand appliqué.

Supply List :

The easiest fabrics to work with are 100% cotton -not blends -and washed and pressed.
- 7/8 to 1 yard of of good quality muslin or light color background fabric (Note: if you are unable to see through your background fabric to trace, you will need Saral® Transfer paper or a small light table)
- cut an 18" x 24" rectangle to use in class

Appliqué fabrics: a large scrap (at least 8" square) of green, brown or black for stems; scraps (at least 4" square) should be enough for the rest of the appliqué shapes.
- dragonfly: two to ten fabrics for body, two fabrics for wings
- large prairie coneflowers: at least three different prints of one color (flowers in the sample are pinks)
- small flowers: at least three different prints of a second color (flowers in the sample are blues)
- large scrap (at least 8" square) solid white quilting-weight fabric (not muslin unless it is bleached white)

Additional fabrics needed to complete the appliqué but not needed for class:
-
bee: black, gold and white prints
- leaves: at least three different greens
- ¼ yard brown or black for leaf border
- additional green fabrics for leaf border
- embroidery floss for stitchery embellishment

Avoid small scale, "busy" prints. Include a variety of textures, values and scale in the prints you choose.

ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES:
- $4.00 materials fee for pre-cut plastic templates
- sewing thread to match each appliqué fabric
- small ruler with 1/8" markings or Mary Sorensen's Skinny Stem Tool (available for purchase on the web or in class)
- sharp, hard lead pencil (#3 pencil, or a mechanical pencil with 2H lead)
-
sharp yellow and silver pencils for marking fabric (I like the Verithin colors #735 & #753 or Quilter's Silver and Quilter's Yellow pencils by W. H. Collins) -do not use chalk pencils or soft lead pencils; do not use Quilters Clean Erase brand pencil
-
pencil sharpener
- very fine silk pins, 1¼" long with small heads (I like Collins fine silk
pins or Iris pins)
-
#10 or #12 betweens or quilting needles (not appliqué needles)
-
small scissors (embroidery size) that will cut fabric -Gingher G5 (not 5" Craft) are perfect!
-
small paper bag for trash
-
plastic template for drawing multiple sizes of circles ¾" and smaller is very handy if you have one (or Mary Sorensen’s Skinny Stem Tool -available for purchase on the web or in class)
