MS/2 –
RIBBON BASKET MEDALLION
6-hour workshop -
intermediate to advanced levels
Explore
the challenges that complex hand appliqué patterns present while
stitching a graceful floral medallion. In this original pattern set
on point, students will learn new techniques while weaving satin, grosgrain
or moiré ribbon into a unique basket which holds cascades of
branches and flowers. Particular emphasis will be placed on fabric selection
and achieving both variety and balance while using a wide array of fabrics
and prints. We will also concentrate on placement and layering of complex
patterns and small shapes, as well as refining needleturn appliqué
techniques. Students must have a comfortable knowledge of hand appliqué.
Supply
List :
- SHARP pencils for marking appliqué fabrics - do not use chalk
pencils; do not use Quilter’s Clean Erase brand pencil (Mary prefers
Sanford or Berol Verithin colors #735˱ or Quilter's Silver and
Quilter's Yellow pencils by W. H. Collins)
- Plastic template for drawing multiple sizes of circles ¾"and
smaller is very handy if you have one (or Mary Sorensen’s Skinny
Stem Tool - available for purchase on the web or in class)
- Small ruler with 1/8"markings (or Mary Sorensen’s Skinny
Stem Tool -available on the web or in class)
- Small scissors (5"or embroidery size) that will cut fabric -
Gingher G5 (NOT 5"Craft) are perfect!
- Sewing thread to match each appliqué fabric
- Mechanical pencil or SHARP pencil w/ hard lead
- #10 or #12 betweens or quilting needles for appliqué
- size 10 or 11 milliner or appliqué needles for ribbon basket
- thimble (if you usually sew with one)
- small paper bag for trash
- very fine silk pins, 1¼"long with small heads (Judy prefers
Collins Fine Sharp Silk Pins)
- Pencil sharpener
- $1.00 materials fee for pre-cut plastic templates
- corrugated cardboard, foamcore board, or a cushioned "Cut N'
Press " board that you can stick pins into and is at least 10"
x 10"
Fabric:
All fabrics must be 100% cotton - NO blends - and washed and pressed.
We will discuss fabric selection in class. This design includes vines
and leaves, as well as various flowers and berries. Avoid small scale,
"busy" prints. Include a variety of textures, values and scale
in the prints you choose. Concentrate on bringing fairly small pieces
(approximately 6" x 8") of a large variety of fabrics, rather
than large yardage of a few fabrics.
- appliqué background fabric: 20½" x 20½"
square good quality muslin or light colored fabric - must be light enough
to see the pattern through to trace
- warm brown, black or green print scrap for stems (at least 8"
x 10")
- scraps (approximately 6" x 8") of at least two green prints
for leaves
-3 to 4 yards of
7/8" or 1" wide (no wider) satin, moiré, grosgrain
or taffeta ribbon for basket (you do not need to use ribbon with wire
in it for this technique, but wire edge ribbons will work). If your
ribbon is narrower than 7/8" you will need 2 to 4 yards extra.
- 1 yard narrow (about ¼" to 3/8" wide) grosgrain or
double faced satin ribbon for basket rim (this should coordinate with
the 1" wide ribbon)
- 7" x 8" rectangle of muslin or fabric about the same color
as the basket ribbon
