MARY SORENSEN

MS/1 - NEEDLETURN WITH A TWIST

A simplified method to hand appliqué gracefully twisting ribbons and other twisting and spiraling shapes. This charming pattern is designed to showcase this elegant but easy technique. Students must have a comfortable knowledge of hand appliqué.

Supply List :

- SHARP pencils for marking appliqué fabrics - do not use chalk pencils; do not use Quilter’s Clean Erase brand pencil (Mary prefers Sanford or Berol Verithin colors #735&#753 or Quilter's Silver and Quilter's Yellow pencils by W. H. Collins)
- Plastic template for drawing multiple sizes of circles ¾"and smaller is very handy if you have one (or Mary Sorensen’s Skinny Stem Tool - available for purchase on the web or in class)
- Small ruler with 1/8"markings (or Mary Sorensen’s Skinny Stem Tool -available on the web or in class)
- Small scissors (5"or embroidery size) that will cut fabric - Gingher G5 (NOT 5"Craft) are perfect!
- Sewing thread to match each appliqué fabric
- Mechanical pencil or SHARP pencil w/ hard lead
- #10 or #12 betweens or quilting needles for appliqué
- size 10 or 11 milliner or appliqué needles for ribbon basket

Fabric:
All fabrics must be 100% cotton - NO blends - and washed and pressed.
- 14" square of good quality muslin or light color background fabric - must be light enough to see the pattern through to trace
- large scraps (at least 8" square) of at least two values of one color for bow (the greater the contrast between the two fabrics, the better the "twisting" effect). Choose two fabrics either light and dark, bright and dull, or multicolor print and tone-on-tone for best effect.
- fat quarter of brown or black print for stems
Additional fabrics needed to complete the appliqué but not needed for class:
- assortment of fabrics for flower petals
